R. 898 To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize COPS grantees to use grant funds for recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES February 9, 2023 Mr. Carter of Texas introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary _______________________________________________________________________ A BILL To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize COPS grantees to use grant funds for recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. This Act may be cited as the ``Recruit and Retain Act of 2023''. SEC. 2. USE OF COPS GRANT FUNDS FOR RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. Section 1701(b) of part Q of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. 10381(b)) is amended-- (1) by redesignating paragraphs (3) through (23) as paragraphs (4) through (24); and (2) by inserting after paragraph (2) the following: ``(3) to recruit and retain career law enforcement officers for deployment in community-oriented policing across the Nation;''. <all>
