Biden's April 28, 2021 American Families Plan proposed a national program phasing in twelve weeks of paid family and medical leave and called on Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act guaranteeing seven paid sick days. A scaled-back four-week paid leave provision passed the House in the Build Back Better Act on November 19, 2021, but the Senate never passed it, and paid leave was dropped from the reconciliation bill enacted in August 2022. Neither universal paid sick days nor a federal paid family and medical leave program became law before his term ended January 20, 2025.
