EPA finalized both promised actions in April 2024. It designated PFOA and PFOS, the two most widely used PFAS, as hazardous substances under CERCLA (final rule published May 8, 2024, effective July 8, 2024), and it issued the first legally enforceable national drinking-water limits (MCLs) for six PFAS under the Safe Drinking Water Act, announced April 10, 2024. Both prongs of the pledge were completed within Biden's term; revisions proposed by the successor administration in 2025 came after the term ended and do not change that.
