On May 5, 2022, Attorney General Garland's Justice Department launched an Office of Environmental Justice within the existing Environment and Natural Resources Division, alongside a comprehensive environmental-justice enforcement strategy. This created a dedicated DOJ environmental-justice unit that operated through the end of the term, but it was an office inside an existing division rather than the promised stand-alone Environmental and Climate Justice Division, and climate justice was not part of its formal title or structure. Partial credit reflects a comparable but smaller-scale structure than the one promised.
