PartialForeign Policy, Defense & Wars

It's past time to end the Forever Wars, which have cost us untold blood and treasure. As I have long argued, we should bring the vast majority of our troops home – from the wars in Afghanistan and the Middle East, and narrowly focus our mission on Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

PartialFact-checker reviewConfidence: 85%

The Afghanistan portion was fulfilled: the 20-year U.S. military presence there ended with the complete withdrawal on August 30, 2021. The broader Middle East portion was not: although the Iraq combat mission formally converted to an advise-and-assist role in December 2021, U.S. forces remained deployed in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere in the region through the end of the term, as Biden's December 6, 2024 War Powers report to Congress documents. The vast majority of U.S. troops did not come home from the Middle East, so the promise was kept in part.
