Assessments
evidence-backed verdictsThese are sourced verdicts from fact-checkers or community evidence reviews — not opinions.
Executive Order 14006 (January 26, 2021) barred the Justice Department from renewing contracts with privately operated criminal detention facilities, and the Bureau of Prisons ended its last private-prison contract on November 30, 2022, ending corporate operation of federal criminal detention under DOJ. The order did not reach immigration detention, where privately operated facilities continued under ICE contracts, nor did it end broader corporate profits from incarceration-related services. The sweeping promise to 'stop corporations from profiteering off of incarceration' was therefore kept in part during the 2021-2025 term.
