Assessments
evidence-backed verdictsThese are sourced verdicts from fact-checkers or community evidence reviews — not opinions.
Biden signed appropriations raising the maximum Pell Grant by $400 for 2022-23 and $500 for 2023-24 - a $900 increase the White House called the largest in more than a decade - bringing the maximum to $7,395, where it remained through the 2024-25 award year at the end of his term. Doubling the 2020-21 maximum of $6,345 would have required roughly $12,700; the actual increase was about 17 percent. His subsequent budget requests sought further increases, but Congress did not enact a doubling.
