Across Biden's full term (Jan 20, 2021 - Jan 20, 2025), no legislation cutting, privatizing, raising the retirement age for, or reducing Social Security benefits was enacted. Biden actively took the promised defensive stand, pledging in his February 7, 2023 State of the Union address to veto any attempt to cut Social Security or Medicare. His term ended with him signing a benefit expansion, the Social Security Fairness Act, on January 5, 2025 - the opposite of a cut. The pledge to reject every effort to weaken the program was kept.
