Biden endorsed the Equality Act, which passed the House 224-206 on February 25, 2021, but it never received a Senate vote and was not enacted, so the promised statutory guarantee for LGBTQ+ Americans did not materialize. Administratively, his Labor Department rescinded the 2020 rule that had broadened the religious exemption for federal contractors, effective March 31, 2023, partially delivering on the pledge to end misuse of religious exemptions.
