Trump pledged in April 2016 to eliminate the roughly $19 trillion national debt within eight years. Treasury data show gross federal debt instead rose from $19.94 trillion on January 19, 2017 to $27.75 trillion on January 19, 2021, and stood at $36.21 trillion on January 17, 2025 - the end of the promised eight-year window. Rather than enacting any debt-reduction plan, he signed major deficit-financed legislation, including the December 2017 tax act and pandemic-era spending packages, and the debt continued rising in his second term. The debt moved sharply in the opposite direction of the promise.
