Assessments
evidence-backed verdictsThese are sourced verdicts from fact-checkers or community evidence reviews — not opinions.
During the first term the U.S. reached major energy-independence milestones: in 2019 it exported more total energy than it imported for the first time since 1952, and in 2020 it became a net exporter of petroleum. However, the promise of total independence from OPEC imports was not achieved: the U.S. remained a net importer of crude oil throughout the term and continued importing substantial volumes from OPEC members (Saudi Arabia alone supplied about 7% of U.S. petroleum imports as recently as 2022). Net-exporter status without ending OPEC imports fulfills part, not all, of the promise as stated.
