The 2016 pledge to oppose any carbon tax was kept: no federal carbon tax was enacted or proposed by the administration during the 2017-2021 term, and opposition continued into the second term. On April 8, 2025, Trump signed Executive Order 14260, directing the Attorney General to identify and move to stop enforcement of state laws involving 'carbon penalties or carbon taxes' - concrete action consistent with the promised opposition.
