Both promised actions occurred within weeks of Trump taking office. In his February 28, 2017 address to a joint session of Congress he asked Congress to eliminate the defense sequester, and his March 2017 FY2018 budget blueprint formally proposed fully repealing defense sequestration while adding $54 billion for national defense. Congress subsequently raised the Budget Control Act defense caps in the Bipartisan Budget Acts of 2018 and 2019, and the caps expired after FY2021.
