PartialForeign Policy, Defense & Wars

We desire to live peacefully and in friendship with Russia and China. I believe an easing of tensions, and improved relations with Russia from a position of strength only is possible.

The promise bundles a broad aspiration of "friendship" with BOTH Russia and China with a specific, emphasized clause about easing tensions / improving relations with RUSSIA. The record is genuinely split, which PARTIAL captures. RUSSIA (aligned pursuit, incomplete outcome): Across both terms Trump personally sought rapprochement — the 2018 Helsinki summit, and in his second term sustained direct diplomacy with Putin aimed at a Ukraine settlement. The Al Jazeera source (Dec 2025) documents that Trump "has been trying to end Russia's nearly four-year war in Ukraine since returning to the White House in January" and has argued the war could end if Kyiv concedes Donbas territory and Western countries "welcome Russia back into the global economy." This is leader-driven pursuit of the named Russia clause. But the OUTCOME of actually "improved relations" is incomplete: first-term US-Russia relations deteriorated sharply, and as of late 2025 no Ukraine peace deal was concluded and sanctions largely persisted. CHINA (misaligned): The "friendship with China / easing tensions" aspiration moved the opposite direction. The PBS source documents the 2025 trade-war escalation — tariffs that "briefly shot up to a terrifying 145%," US chip embargoes and Chinese rare-earth cutoffs — concluding that "the United States and China proved how much they could hurt each other in a trade war." A late-2025 truce repaired some damage but relations stayed adversarial. Net: strong pursuit of the Russia clause (aligned) but active escalation of tensions with China (against the friendship clause) and an incomplete "improved relations" outcome even with Russia. PARTIAL is the correct, appropriately hedged rating for this fuzzy directional promise.
