Trump delivered the appointments component: the Senate confirmed Jeff Sessions as Attorney General on Feb. 8, 2017, and Executive Order 13773 (Feb. 9, 2017) created a Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, making crime reduction stated executive-branch policy. FBI data show violent crime declined modestly from 2017 through 2019, but in 2020, the term's final year, murders jumped nearly 30% (the largest one-year increase on record) and overall violent crime rose about 5%. The aspirational pledge to 'restore law and order' was therefore only partly realized over the full term (Jan. 2017 - Jan. 2021).
