The promised outcome - that crime and violence would 'come to an end' and safety be restored beginning Jan. 20, 2017 - did not materialize by the end of the term (Jan. 20, 2021). The administration genuinely engaged the issue, issuing Executive Order 13773 (Feb. 9, 2017) to establish a crime-reduction task force and pursuing federal enforcement initiatives, and FBI data show violent crime edged down from 2017 through 2019. But 2020 closed the term with a record near-30% surge in murders and an approximately 5% rise in violent crime, erasing the earlier declines. This was a genuine effort whose promised result did not land.
