In his first week, Executive Order 13768 (January 25, 2017) prioritized removal of aliens with criminal convictions and directed hiring 10,000 additional immigration officers, but ICE's deportation-officer corps was never tripled during the first term and removals fell far short of two million. On day one of his second term, Executive Order 14159 (January 20, 2025) directed joint federal-state-local Homeland Security Task Forces in every state, and Congress massively expanded ICE enforcement funding in 2025. Even so, PBS reported in June 2026 that first-year removals fell short of the administration's own goal of roughly one million per year, leaving cumulative criminal-alien removals well below the promised two million. The task-force and joint-operations elements were delivered; the tripling and headline removal numbers were not.
