Nothing was signed on day one, and through the first term (2017-2021) neither part of the pledge was fulfilled; the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act, 18 U.S.C. 922(q), remains on the books and no repeal was enacted. In the second term, on April 2, 2026, Defense Secretary Hegseth directed installation commanders to approve service members' requests to carry personal firearms on base with a presumption that it is necessary for personal protection, describing bases as having effectively been gun-free zones. That addresses the military-base half of the promise roughly nine years after the promised first-day deadline, while school gun-free zones remain in place.
