I won't be running around the country begging people for money for my campaign. I won't owe anybody anything. I won't be beholden to anyone except to you, the American people.

Trump largely self-funded his 2015-2016 primary campaign, lending it over $40 million. But in May 2016 he signed a joint fundraising agreement with the RNC creating the Trump Victory and Make America Great Again committees, allowing individual donors to give up to $449,400, and began personally headlining high-dollar fundraisers, drawing over $6 million at the first event that month. From the 2016 general election onward he ran conventional large-donor fundraising operations, the concrete opposite of the pledge as stated.
