Trump imposed 25% Section 232 tariffs on imported automobiles (effective April 3, 2025) and auto parts (by May 3, 2025) expressly to shift assembly back to the United States, and some automakers responded: GM announced a $4 billion move of Mexican production to three U.S. plants in June 2025, and Stellantis announced a $13 billion U.S. expansion in October 2025. But the promised rapid revival has not occurred - motor-vehicle-sector employment declined in 2025, manufacturing overall shed about 83,000 jobs in his first year, and the announced plants will take years to build, with major launches slated for 2027. A forceful attempt whose promised fast comeback and hundreds of thousands of jobs had not landed as of July 3, 2026.
