Rather than expanding the research enterprise behind cancer and Alzheimer's breakthroughs, the administration contracted it: in 2025 it canceled more than 1,700 NIH research grants (a federal judge ruled the directives unlawful in June 2025 before the Supreme Court allowed the cancellations to proceed that August), NIH lost roughly 1,500 employees, and the president's FY2026 budget proposed cutting NIH by about 40 percent — including reducing the National Cancer Institute's roughly $7 billion budget to about $4.5 billion. Congress rejected those cuts in January 2026 and increased cancer and Alzheimer's funding over the administration's objection. The administration's own concrete measures through July 2, 2026 moved federal medical-research capacity in the opposite direction of this promise.
