The administration pushed supply-side measures aimed at lower prices - a day-one national energy emergency, expanded federal leasing, and faster permitting - but the promised outcome did not land. At the 12-month mark (January 20, 2026), gasoline was down only about 10 percent from a year earlier while electricity prices had risen and natural gas costs were up more than 50 percent, nowhere near a 50 percent cut. By May 2026 gasoline was 40.5 percent higher than a year earlier amid an energy price shock. The pledge to halve energy prices within 12 months was not met despite genuine policy efforts in that direction.
