Assessments

Executive Order 14154 (Jan. 20, 2025) directed agencies to suspend, revise, or rescind regulations deemed burdensome to oil, natural gas, and coal development and included a section titled 'Unleashing Energy Dominance through Efficient Permitting' mandating expedited permitting; a national energy emergency was declared the same day. EIA reports U.S. total energy production reached a record 107 quadrillion Btu in 2025, with crude oil at a record 13.6 million b/d, dry natural gas at a record 39 Tcf, and coal production up 4% to 533 million short tons after two years of decline. Restrictions were rolled back, permitting was streamlined, and production rose across the board through mid-2026.
