On March 26, 2025, Trump proclaimed 25% Section 232 tariffs on imported automobiles effective April 3, 2025 (auto parts May 3, 2025), with the U.S. content of USMCA-compliant vehicles exempt - the promised tariff-and-incentive mechanism, but at a fraction of the promised 100-200% rate. Auto jobs have not come back: U.S. manufacturing employment declined by roughly 33,000 jobs over 2025, and automakers cited tariffs among reasons for announced job cuts, while auto plants in Mexico continued producing for the U.S. market. As of July 3, 2026 the 25% sector tariffs remain in force (unaffected by the Supreme Court's February 2026 IEEPA ruling), but the specific measurable outcomes promised - 100-200% car tariffs and an auto-jobs revival - have not materialized.
