Trump signed IEEPA orders on February 1, 2025 imposing the promised 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico (10% on Canadian energy) and an additional 10% on China; the China tariff took effect February 4, 2025, while the Mexico and Canada tariffs were paused for a month and took effect March 4, 2025 - not 'day one.' On March 6, 2025 goods qualifying for USMCA preference were exempted, sparing a large share of North American trade, and on February 20, 2026 the Supreme Court held that IEEPA does not authorize tariffs, vacating these duties; collection stopped February 24, 2026 and they were not reimposed under another authority. The tariffs were imposed at the stated rates and operated for roughly a year, but arrived later than promised, were substantially narrowed within days, and were ultimately ruled unlawful.
