At noon on Inauguration Day, we will sack the anti-gun fanatic Steve Dettelbach, have you ever heard of him? He's a disaster. And replace him with an ATF director who respects the sacred rights to keep and bear arms.

Fully KeptFact-checker reviewConfidence: 80%

Dettelbach was not literally sacked at noon on Inauguration Day because he stepped down in mid-January 2025, days before Trump took office, achieving the promised departure by preemptive resignation. Trump then installed gun-rights-aligned leadership at ATF: FBI Director Kash Patel as acting director in February 2025, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll from April 2025, and Senate-confirmed Director Robert Cekada on April 29, 2026, who with DOJ leadership has publicly embraced the gun industry and moved to ease firearms regulations. The promised end state — Dettelbach gone at the start of the term and replaced by leadership aligned with gun-rights priorities — was essentially delivered, though the replacement was not in place at noon on Day One.
