“At noon on Inauguration Day, we will sack the anti-gun fanatic Steve Dettelbach, have you ever heard of him? He's a disaster. And replace him with an ATF director who respects the sacred rights to keep and bear arms.”

Dettelbach was not literally sacked at noon on Inauguration Day because he stepped down in mid-January 2025, days before Trump took office, achieving the promised departure by preemptive resignation. Trump then installed gun-rights-aligned leadership at ATF: FBI Director Kash Patel as acting director in February 2025, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll from April 2025, and Senate-confirmed Director Robert Cekada on April 29, 2026, who with DOJ leadership has publicly embraced the gun industry and moved to ease firearms regulations. The promised end state — Dettelbach gone at the start of the term and replaced by leadership aligned with gun-rights priorities — was essentially delivered, though the replacement was not in place at noon on Day One.
