The 2023 ATF stabilizing-brace rule was universally vacated by a federal district court on June 13, 2024 (Mock v. Garland), before Trump took office. In July 2025 the Trump Justice Department stipulated to dismissal of the government's remaining appeal (Mock v. Bondi, 5th Cir. No. 24-10743), making the vacatur permanent, and on May 6, 2026 ATF published a proposed rule removing the 2023 brace criteria from the regulatory definitions of 'rifle.' ATF is barred from enforcing the rule nationwide, so the promised elimination is complete in effect; the initial vacatur came from the courts during Biden's term, with the administration's 2025-2026 actions finalizing it.
