In March 2025, Executive Order 14252 ('Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful') created a federal task force directing an expanded federal law-enforcement presence in Washington and the restoration of damaged or defaced federal monuments and removal of graffiti. On August 11, 2025, the president invoked Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and activated roughly 800 National Guard members, the first such use of that authority. The pledge to reassert greater federal control over the capital in the name of law and order and monument upkeep was carried out, though the police takeover was statutorily limited to 30 days and the Guard deployment faced court challenges.
