Assessments
evidence-backed verdictsThese are sourced verdicts from fact-checkers or community evidence reviews — not opinions.
The promised crackdown was launched early in the second term. On April 25, 2025, Attorney General Bondi rescinded Garland-era protections for the press in leak investigations, and a Justice Department final rule effective May 2, 2025 restored compulsory process against journalists, expressly citing the need to subpoena journalists who coordinated with federal employees to leak protected materials. Director of National Intelligence Gabbard announced criminal referrals of alleged intelligence-community leakers in April 2025, with additional referrals and leak investigations following at DHS and the Pentagon. The promise to launch a major crackdown on government leakers who work with the media was fulfilled.
