Trump took concrete action in the opposite direction of this promise. On January 24, 2025, he fired about 17 inspectors general without the 30-day congressional notice and case-specific rationale required by the Inspector General Act; on September 24, 2025, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes ruled the firings violated the Act, while declining to reinstate the plaintiffs. No initiative to make Inspector General offices more independent or physically separate them from the departments they oversee has been undertaken through July 2, 2026.
