President Trump signed Executive Order 14248 on March 25, 2025, directing documentary proof of citizenship on the federal voter registration form, voter-verifiable paper-record standards, and enforcement against states counting mail ballots received after Election Day. Federal courts blocked the order's central provisions, and in June 2026 U.S. District Judge Denise Casper permanently barred most of it, ruling that election-rule authority belongs to Congress and the states rather than the President. National voter ID and same-day-voting requirements were not enacted. This was a genuine, documented attempt that was largely stopped by the courts.
