In December 2023, as Majority Leader, Schumer brought the Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 (S.25) to the floor by unanimous-consent request and Democrats sought passage of universal background checks the same day. Republicans, led by Sen. John Barrasso's objection, blocked both, so neither advanced. He pushed the measures but they did not pass.
