His official campaign site (michaelbennet.com/priorities/education) confirms the pledge to "ensure every kid has the tools to read confidently by the end of third grade and reach math proficiency by fifth grade" and confirms he was running for Governor of Colorado — leading a statewide K-12 education effort is a governor's function, not an action a sitting U.S. Senator can perform. Bennet LOST the Democratic gubernatorial primary to Attorney General Phil Weiser on June 30, 2026 (~54.7%-45.3%), sending him "back to Washington." He therefore never obtained the office that would allow him to lead the promised state effort.
