Independently verified. Halting Lake Okeechobee discharges to the St. Lucie is Mast's defining signature issue and he demonstrably LED the effort far beyond a single vote. Confirmed via independent web search (the house.gov page returns 403 to bots, but the bills are corroborated elsewhere): he authored/introduced the Stop Harmful Discharges Act (2018), a three-bill Treasure Coast package (2021), the Stop Poisoning Florida Act, and inserted Water Resources Development Act amendments requiring the Corps to account for every drop sent into the St. Lucie and codifying the goal of ending the discharges. He repeatedly demanded long-term halts via letters and news conferences (e.g. his March 2024 demand for a long-term halt). His public pressure coincided with the Corps repeatedly pausing eastern discharges (WPTV, Maj. Cory Bell), and the 2024 LOSOM manual -- the first ever to weigh public-health/toxic-algae risk -- is projected to cut St. Lucie discharges by roughly 75%, a genuine long-term operational change. It is not FULL because discharges are reduced, not eliminated: they still occur when the lake exceeds ~16.5-17 feet. Party-neutral check: a Democrat with an identical record (lead sponsor of multiple targeted bills + WRDA amendments + a documented partial operational win) would earn the same CHAMPIONED label, so this is not partisan leniency. At least two real, live supporting sources substantiate the record.
